Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from attorneys and law firm leadership about Relay.

No. Relay is a secure communication conduit—functionally equivalent to an encrypted phone line or sealed correspondence. No third party reads, moderates, or has access to chat content. All messages are encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256). The platform does not introduce any additional parties into the privileged communication, and no human at ACS or Relay has the ability to view conversation contents. Using Relay for attorney-client communications carries no greater privilege risk than using an encrypted email service or a private phone call.
No. There is no admin panel, content moderation queue, or support tool that allows any Relay employee to view, search, or browse message contents. Chat data is encrypted at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.3), and no employee encounters chat text in the normal course of business. Access to underlying infrastructure is tightly restricted via role-based access controls (Azure RBAC) and is fully auditable. Relay is built so that no one has a reason—or a convenient means—to access your conversations.
Every chat session uses a unique, tokenized URL that expires after use. The session itself runs over HTTPS with TLS 1.3 encryption in transit. All stored message data is encrypted with AES-256. Session tokens are single-use and time-limited—they cannot be reused, shared, or guessed. The initial SMS exchange contains no sensitive content; it is merely used to establish consent and transition the client into the encrypted web session.
No. Your conversation data is never used to train, fine-tune, or improve any AI or machine learning models. Translation is performed via API calls to DeepL and Google Translate, which process text solely to return a translation for that specific request. Once the translation is returned, no residual data is retained by the translation provider for training purposes. We can provide written contractual guarantees to this effect.
Data retention is fully configurable. Firms can set automatic deletion policies to purge chat data after export to their case management system—meaning once you've downloaded the transcript, the data is removed from Relay's servers on a schedule you define. Alternatively, data can be retained for a custom period to comply with your firm's record-keeping obligations. You maintain full control.
No. The client receives a standard text message, replies to it, and then taps a link that opens directly in their phone's web browser. No app download, no account creation, no passwords. This is especially important for clients who may not be tech-savvy or who may be wary of installing unfamiliar software. The "Progressive Trust" flow makes the process feel natural and safe.
Relay is powered by DeepL and Google Translate, which are industry-leading translation engines with strong performance across major world languages. For routine communications—scheduling, document requests, intake questions—translation quality is excellent. For legally sensitive communications where precise terminology is critical (e.g., explaining specific legal terms, obtaining informed consent on nuanced matters), we recommend using a certified interpreter, just as you would today. Relay is designed to complement, not replace, professional interpretation for formal legal proceedings.
